Evaluating the Effectiveness of Approaches to Learning Essay There are various ways which people can learn. There is a need to identify approaches that can assess learning effectively. David Kolb proposed a four stage learning process with a cycle of learning. (Gravells, A. 2008). The process is represented in the diagram below: Concrete experience This is process where the learner experiences or immerses themselves in the task. It is the first stage where the task assigned is carried out. It is also called the doing stage. In my specialism, this could be the time where I give my learner class assignment or test to do in the class. (Gravells, A. 2008). It is good way of assessing learning and getting feedback immediately. Observation and Reflection This involves stepping back from the activity and reviewing what has been done and experienced. Here the learner’s values, attitudes and beliefs can affect their thinking process. This is the process where the learner thinks about what they you have done. The learner has the opportunity to reflect on what has been done in the classroom through the home work given. Abstract conceptualisation This is where the learner tries to interpret and understand the activities that have been carried out during learning. This is the planning how you will do it differently stage. The learner has the opportunity to do this as I lecture a particular topic in mathematics. Active Experimentation It enables the learner to take in new learning and predict what is likely to happen next or what future actions can be taken to improve the way activities can be done in future. This is the redoing stage based upon experience and reflection. When feedback on Tests or home work is given, the learner has the opportunity to improve upon what has already been submitted. Learning styles A learning style is a learner’s consistent way of responding and using stimuli in the context of learning. Honey and Mumford’s learning style questionnaire is another theory used to demonstrate how a learner is able to learn effectively. Questionnaires were given to the learner’s that probes general behavioural tendencies. Although their theory is drawn from David Kolb, it had some differences. Learners were divided into Reflectors, Theorists, Pragmatist and Activist. Reflector The learner prefers to learn from activities they watch, think and review what has happened. To be able to ensure learning takes place for this kind of learner, as a Teacher I would organise more group work, discussions and lecturing in mathematics sessions. Also give out hand outs for learner to read and reflect upon. Theorists Learners in this category prefer to think a problem through step by step manner. They like lectures, analogies, systems, case studies, models and reading. I would organise more lectures on a topic, give handouts and assignments for such learners giving them the opportunity to tackle problems/ questions later on. Pragmatist The learners prefer to apply new learning to actual practice to see if they work. They prefer field works, laboratories, observations, feedback and coaching. Â  Here learning can effectively take place where a lot of examples on topics are tried out with learner before giving out home work or assignments. A lot of clear feedback on assignments/ tasks and activities will be needed to ensure the learners actually understand information passed across.

Learning Story Example in Child Care Di Zheng Introduction Children have their own learning story as they explore their social and natural environment. They have their own ways of solving problems and dealing with the issues they face. This makes them unique from one person to another. Furthermore, it helps adult understand the importance of seeing things lightly-no matter how difficult life may seem. Sometimes, it is better to learn from children because their innocence enlightens the adults-through the way they see ideas and things from their perspectives. In early childhood education, teachers are considering even the most basic aspect of childs learning. They identify and strengthen the flourishing skills and abilities of children based on each childs behaviour, actions, and words. Teachers are taking the opportunity to expand the ideas, thoughts, feelings, and abilities of each child when they see interesting events or behaviour. To further understand these ideas, several authors on childhood education provide learning stories. These le arning stories illustrate the journey of toddlers in solving problems and accomplishing tasks. The purpose of this report is to discuss Rubys shopping. This paper aims to explore Rubys demonstrated skills and abilities in her imaginary world. Understanding Rubys capabilities, skills, and personality enable teachers to use different strategies to nurture Rubys experience and understanding. Learning Story Ruby is playing the sandpit making puddings, but she wants to have other ingredients to finish her tasks. She wants apples, bananas, chocolate, and ice cream, but she cannot have it all in the centre so she needs to go shopping. Her teacher assist her in finding the toy fruits and other things, which she enjoys doing. After getting all the things she needed, Ruby talks to her teacher about the experience and she says that she loves buying things. The next day, another teacher joins her to go to a real supermarket to buy things they need. To add more to their shopping list, Ruby asks other teachers what they want her to buy. It gives her more responsibilities than her typical needs. When they reach the supermarket, the teacher, Ruby, and another child, Miller, start to buy everything. They return to the centre after completing their errands and talk about what they learn. The teacher asks Ruby about what she learns and feels while shopping. Ruby says that she loves shopping. During th e first and second activity, the teacher identifies the skills and abilities of Ruby when it comes to money and shopping sequencing. She also knows what to consider and she is firm with her shopping list. Though she tends to forget some things in her list, she shows determination in completing everything. She is also patient in exploring her social environment. Furthermore, she is open to assistance and help when needed. She accepts suggestion and works with it to complete her tasks successfully. The teachers working with her perceive these opportunities and skills in nurturing the mind and wellbeing of the child. Learning Assessment Ruby shows significant interest in her social environment-and she does not simply create things according to rules. She demonstrates her creativity by looking for more resources within her reach. It is true that Rubys make-believe play provides an information exchange within a responsive social context. Rubys use of language in her play as she responds, imagines, questions, describes, creates, and decides shows her independence, confidence, and sense of responsibility for her own learning (p.8). This statement justifies Rubys desire to learn and to explore the resources available for her. As she explores, she learns new things. This can be a form of scientific inquiry wherein she conducts observation, classification, experimentation, prediction, drawing conclusions, and communication of ideas (Neil, 2009). With her teachers help, Ruby is able to accomplish her tasks the scientific way. In this manner, Ruby demonstrates different feelings and emotions that justify her disposition. It is correct to say that her discussion with her teacher going on a trip to the supermarket enabled Ruby to take responsibility for her learning and to express her ideas and feelings, two very significant learning dispositions (p.9). This statement is true because Ruby does not stress herself in finding solution to her problems. She takes one step at a time and completes them successfully. Another important to consider is Rubys mathematical abilities. In the first activity, Ruby knows how to pay for the things she buys to the supermarket. She is aware that everything taken from the supermarket should be paid immediately. This practice is also shown in her journey to the real supermarket. This mathematic ability may not be unique, but interesting to see from a young child. Ruby can have a significant advantage in mathematical concepts and learning because she is aware of numbers and mathematical ideas. It is true that to be good or proficient at mathematics, children must know more than the content. They must be able to communicate the knowledge, connect that knowledge to other mathematical ideas and to other subject areas, represent their understanding, use that knowledge as they solve problems and reason (Copley, 2010, p.29). From this sense, it can be said that mathematics should not only be practiced inside the classroom, but also in everyday life (Peters Rameka, 2 010). In Rubys case, these ideas are perceived because she uses her mathematical knowledge in the real world. She uses math to buy things in the supermarket-not only in money, but also sequencing. It is also important to note that children need to demonstrate a disposition that think flexibility and with persistence about mathematic to solve problems (Copley, 2010, p.29). This thought occurs in Ruby in the first activity. She demonstrates the ability to solve problems by finding more resources. She does not simply complete the pudding; instead, she finds other things to make the pudding better in taste, smell, and appearance. These thoughts show how Ruby is able to apply mathematics in everyday life. Linking to Te Whaariki The Te Whariki is the Ministry of Education in New Zealand providing early childhood curriculum policy statement. This ministry plays an important role in shaping and nurturing early childhood curriculum to help early learners and educators in expanding knowledge, abilities, skills, personality, and identity. The goals of the early childhood curriculum under the Te Whariki include empowerment, holistic development, family and community, and relationships (Ministry of Education, 1996). Empowerment aims to see how children empower their skills and abilities to grow and learn. Holistic development aims to show childrens holistic growth and learning. Family and community aims to expand the knowledge and emotional stability of children with their family and community. Relationships encourage children to establish and learn the different kinds of relationships that they can use in their social connection and interaction. The Te Whariki curriculum aims to establish connection with people an d understand childrens personality, identity, and skills at an early age. Using different teaching strategies and methods, teachers are able to unleash the innate skills of children. After unleashing these skills, the teachers are able to nurturing and mould them according to the desires and personalities of children. In Rubys case, it shows that the teachers are responding to the goals and principles of Te Whariki in empowering, holistically developing, establishing community, and encouraging relationships. Rubys simple journey to the supermarket with Miller and her teacher creates a significant impact to her being because it demonstrates her skills and help her identify the different things available around her. These understandings correspond to Te Whariki. Linking to New Zealand Curriculum In the case of the New Zealand curriculum, Rubys learning story demonstrates her abilities and skills at a young age. In early childhood curriculum, this is an important development because not all children are able to progress as fast as Ruby. This is the reason why numerous childhood education programs and services are available throughout New Zealand-to help and encourage young children to unleash their skills, talents, and knowledge innate to them. It is important to note that early childhood care and education in New Zealand cover the years from birth to school entry age. Although participation is voluntary, attendance levels within early childhood education services continue to increase for all ages (Ministry of Education, 1996, p.17). This statement justifies that early childhood education programs and services reveal that early childhood learners are increasing in population over the years. The probable reason behind this is due to the increasing desire of parents to expose t heir children to the real world (Ministry of Education, 2007). Aside from the fact that some parents do not have sufficient time for their children, encouraging toddlers to communicate and explore their social environment will shape their personality, identity, and way of life (Ministry of Education, 2007). This is the reason why the New Zealand curriculum is imposing strict policies in nurturing and educating young learners. According to the Ministry of Education (1996), Early childhood education services are committed to ensuring that learning opportunities are not restricted by gender, locality, or economic constraints (p.17). This statement argues that the New Zealand curriculum is devoted to provide learning opportunities to any toddle from all walks of life. They do not disregard children according to gender, locality, or economic constraints because they want to provide education for all. This principle of the curriculum is shown in the second activity of Rubys journey to the supermarket wherein the teacher includes Miller into the activity. Two children, a boy and a girl, enjoy the activity as they both want to learn about things. Evaluation Considering Rubys learning story, it can be said that early childhood education is both fun and complicated. Children nowadays need real situations, occurrences, and events to clearly shape their knowledge and abilities (Dunn Stinson, 2012). Due to this, numerous early childhood programs and services are moving beyond the four corners of the classroom and explore the real world with these young learners. However, the prgrams and services provided to these children are related, connected, and in accordance to the standard academic curriculum of early childhood education. The Ministry of Education (1996) emphasizes that many early childhood education services exist as part of a national organisation which provides their philosophical rationale and direction. The particular approach of each organisation to curriculum is an essential part of its identity, and some organisations run specialised training programmes to assist in developing a curriculum appropriate for their particular phil osophy (p.17). From this sense, it can be said that early childhood education should not only be fun, enjoyable, and light. It should also provide extensive learning and exploration according to the goals of early childhood curriculum. The Te Whariki is doing its best to shape the curriculum based on the needs and demands of the children for their innocence is wide and great (Alvestad, Duncan, Berge, 2009). Therefore, they want to explore the world differently-using real experiences, things, and environment. This judgment supports the Ministry of Educations (1996) claim saying that the early childhood curriculum recognises that there can be wide variations in the rate and timing of childrens growth and development and in their capacity to learn new things in new places (p.20). The early childhood curriculum is more complicated than any curriculums because it does not only consider the age and condition of the students, but also their learning abilities, mood, and desires for them t o successfully grow and develop (Blaiklock, 2011). In Rubys case, it is shown that the teachers in the centre are doing their best to provide children the best environment. They show children the real world with great guidance and assistance. Through these things, children would be able to explore their social environment without being vulnerable or hesitant because they know that someone is there to support them. Conclusion Rubys learning story is interesting because she demonstrates strong abilities and skills at an early age. However, not only her abilities and personalities should be considered, but the role and competency of the educators as well. The learning story reveals that the teachers are aware of the importance of the real world-and they go extra mile to provide children their needs in holistic development. As they physically, mentally, and emotionally develop through experiences, children are also able to establish communication and relationships with their community. All these things are shown in Rubys learning story-and they all correspond to the principles and goals of Te Whariki and New Zealand early childhood education curriculum. When Different Kinds Of Organisms Interact Microorganisms, as the name suggests, are extremely minute organisms which are impossible to be observed by the naked eyes. Due to their size, they are mostly interpreted as being single-celled organisms and include different types of organisms in their classification bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea and protists. Also, there are some animals which are so small that they need to be visualised under microscope for their structure to be determined, hence are termed as microscopic animals. While most of the microorganisms, due to their ability to interrupt with the normal cellular activities of other living organisms, are considered mostly as being pathogenic, they are also advantageous in a huge number of ways and their role in nature makes them crucial for the balance of the ecosystem. When different kinds of organisms interact with each other for living, the process of symbiosis occurs. The symbiosis can occur through the fusion of one organism into the other known as endosymbiosis or just through the extracellular communication of the organisms known as ectosymbiosis. The interaction among these organisms can occur in different forms such as mutualism where both of the organisms associate to benefit from each other, commensalism where one organism is in an advantageous stage while the other remains neutral with no gain or loss and parasitism where an organism takes the benefits for its survival by harming the other organism it is attached with (Prescott, 1999). The symbiotic behaviour of the microorganisms which helps them in forming different kind of relationships such as mutualism and commensalism with different kinds of animals has proved to be very beneficial for them. One of the significant benefits has been the aid provided by the microorganisms during the digestion of food in the intestinal tract of the animals. For example the presence of the microbial ecology inside the body of ruminant animals has played a huge role in the food digestion process within their rumen. Ruminant animals, which depend mainly on grasses and other fibre-rich plants, gain cellulose after food consumption to supply their high demand for energy. However, the lack of natural enzyme within their bodies can be counter effective during the cellular activities of these animals. This problem is overcome by different microorganisms found inside the rumen of the ruminants such as ciliated protozoa, anaerobic fungi and many bacterial species such as Fibrobacter succi nogenes and Ruminococcus albus which provide enzymes for breaking down cellulose to various carbon products such as glucose for energy. These organisms which create carbon cycle within the body of ruminants are important in providing organic compounds, proteins and vitamins to the animals (Wallace, 2008). Also, there are other organisms such as leaf-cutting insects which heavily rely on different types of bacteria for their nutrition. These bacteria belonging to different families such as Enterobacteriacaea and different genera such as Prevotella, Ruminococcus, Klebsiella, etc., which together form a fungal population, acquire the capability of degrading the fibres that constitute the cell walls of the plant. These polymers are hydrolysed into smaller monomers due to the fungal activities and are very useful for these leaf-cutting insects such as ants to achieve energy for survival. The relationship of the fungus and the leaf-cutting insects is mutual as the insects which cultivate the fungus help the microorganisms by sheltering them in a safe and facilitated environment within the leaves (Suen et.al. 2010). Not only animals, but microorganisms, with their efficiency in creating symbiosis with different living creatures, have been very helpful for the growth and maintenance of huge variety of plants in many numbers of ways. The roots are the main pathways for the absorption of different nutritional components needed for the plants to survive and grow. To do so, they come in contact with the soil hence fixing the plants into stationary position. This area of the interaction of the plant roots and the soil is called the rhizosphere. The rhizosphere contains a number of microorganisms which form mutualistic relationship with the plants, therefore allowing both of the plants and the microorganisms to exist and function normally. Different types of microorganisms such as the fungal strain, Trichoderma viride, are very important in protecting the soil against pathogens by producing antibiotics. This is crucial for the plants as it helps them to avoid different diseases. Besides this, plants ab sorb different molecules synthesised by different microorganisms present in the region to support their development. Some of the molecules include plant hormones such as gibberellic acid produced by the fungus, Gibberella fujikuro, cytokinins, auxins, etc., along with various other components such as amino acids, sugars and vitamins which help the plants to grow and maintain their structure (Starkey, 1958). Along with different organic molecules, several inorganic factors are also needed for ensuring the growth of plants. Among these, nitrogen is considered to be a vital aspect for the plant development. Nitrogen gases, which dominate the earthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s atmosphere, cannot be used directly by the plant materials and so need to be converted into various nitrogen containing compounds. During this process of nitrogen fixing, different microorganisms come into play making it possible for the plants to absorb the compounds. Among different types of plants, leguminous plants use different bacteria such as Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium for the fixing of nitrogen. These bacteria enter into the plants by piercing through the walls and the epidermis of the root cells and ultimately giving rise to the nodules. After the entry, the microorganisms become active for nitrogen fixation at the site called bacteroids present within the nodule. The nodules also contain leghemoglobin which have features similar to that of haemoglobin in human beings. The ability of these molecules to provide oxygen is very important for the bacteroids to maintain their ATP level and also for the nodules to give their red colour. The darkness of the nodule helps in determining the degree of N2 fixation. Besides the symbiotic relation of Rhizobium and leguminous plants, the interaction between the bacteria and other non-leguminous plants such as Parasponia andersonii also occurs to fix the nitrogen. Apart from Rhizobium, several other ba cteria such as Frankia form symbiotic relationship with various dicotyledonous plants for the formation of the nodules. These nodules, in presence of sufficient oxygen, increase their nitrogenous activity and help in fixing nitrogen required for the growth and development of plants (Burris et.al. 1992). Likewise, different microorganisms also play huge role in the area of biotechnology. The use of the biotechnology which has great impact in different fields such as medicine, agriculture, engineering, etc. make use of biological organisms and are involved in some sort of industrial processes. This also includes food technology which has been hugely influenced by the use of microorganisms during the process. One of the important aspects of the food technology where microorganisms are utilised includes fermentation. Fermentation is the process of oxidising the sugar molecules such as carbohydrates for the formation of smaller molecules such as alcohol and carbon dioxide which are simultaneously reduced in an oxygen deprived environment. So, the fermentation process has been used for the production of different kinds of alcohol such as wine where different strains of yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Saccharomyces ellipsoideus are used to extract the alcoholic content from the c arbohydrates as well as beer which are produced by the fermentation of starch obtained from cereals using other strains of yeast such as Saccharomyces carlsbergensis (Prescott, 1999). Besides producing alcohol, milk can also be fermented to produce lactic acid which is useful in dairy products such as yogurt, cream, cheese, butter, etc. To synthesise these products, different lactic acid bacteria belonging to various genera such as Lactococcus, Lactobacilli, Enterococci, Streptococci, etc. are used during the fermentation process. Different strains of these bacteria are used in different ways to achieve the desired product such as the bacteria Lactobacilli bulagricus and Streptococcus thermophilus provide the milk with good texture and flavour giving yogurt as the end product. However, the inability of some other bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus to provide texture leaves the milk only with considerable acidity (Acidophilus milk). This is one of the useful products of milk fermentation (Vuyst 2000). Also, the process of bread making is highly affected by the bacterial strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae which ferment different saccharides such as glucose and fructose present naturally in the dough, sucrose added by the baker and maltose produced through the breakdown of starch into acids. The fermentation converts the sugars into acids such as CO2, hence providing the bread with the needed texture, taste and odour (Attfield et.al. 2001). In addition to these, fermentation industry has been proved to be very advantageous to meet the high demand of antibiotics whilst maintaining the economy during their production. These antibiotics are generated from the growth of microorganisms such as different strains of fungus Penicillium and are known as secondary metabolites. This rapid production of antibiotics is useful in different areas ranging from human bodies to soil to combat different pathogens and other harmful microbes (Wilkinson, 1975). Along with the use of the microorganisms in different fields of biotechnology, rapid development has been observed in the genetic engineering where the DNA of an organism is modified using several means such as enzymes and vectors and recombinant DNA is obtained that is used to for benefits. Microorganisms have been modified for different medical purposes. The proteins that have the potential of treating certain diseases or illness have been extracted through the genetically modified microorganisms. The alternation of genes in an organism to treat diseases known as gene therapy makes great use of different strains of bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Listeria as well as Escherichia coli and certain types of yeast (Vassaux et.al. 2005). Among these, there has been significant achievement in the cancer treatment through the use of modified microorganisms. Various microorganisms such belonging to the strains of Clostridium, Bifidobacterium, Salmonella, Mycobacterium, Bacillus and L isteria, which are either obligate anaerobic or facultative anaerobic, have the ability of supressing the tumour growth by acting as anticancer agents and hence targeting the overgrowing cells (Bernades et.al. 2010). Similarly, the use of vaccines has been very important to treat different diseases such as small pox, measles, mumps, polio, etc. These vaccines which are inserted into organismsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ bodies carry several antigens and so induce the immune response within the body systems. The production of these useful antigens is possible through the different microbial strains of bacteria and viruses such as Staphylococcus  carnosus, Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, etc. which are weakened and are used as carriers for the antigens. This causes the antibodies against certain pathogens to be produced inside the living body of the organisms (Schoen et al. 2007). The technique of genetically modifying microorganisms has been of great use in the field of agriculture. Different bacteria such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens are used to produce recombinant DNA with desired gene and are transferred into the plants in order to produce different plant growth hormones and hence increase crop productivity. Also, the genes from other bacteria such as Bacillus thuringiensis have been transformed using recombinant DNA technology and inserted into the plant cells of different types such as tomato and tobacco enabling them to resist against diseases caused by the pests. Besides different pests, fungi and insects, the frost formation can also disturb the normal functioning of cells in many agricultural crops. There are several biological agents that can induce in the nucleation of ice layer in the leaf surfaces. To reduce the effects of these agents, several microorganisms such as ice-minus strain of Pseudomonas syringae bacteria, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Erwi nia herbicola, etc. are used to protect the plants against ice formation (Atlas, 1998). With so many benefits and many more such as in treatment of sewages and wastes, energy recovery through large production of biomass that are brought through the use of microorganisms, they can hardly be considered as disease causing agents. All the advantages are very necessary to maintain the equilibrium of the environment and to benefit human beings during daily survivals. While the pathogenic organisms that carry diseases need to be controlled from growth, attempt of eradicating the microorganisms completely from the ecosystem needs to be avoided as this can counter balance the positive effects carried by them and can induce a serious threat to the survival of some other organisms in the living system.

Is societies violence the media’s fault? This is the question that has been asked since before television was in every American’s house. Of course there are the different types of media today ranging from newspapers, to on-line reports and stories. There have been arguments upon arguments about this issue, and over 3,000 studies conducted. Unfortunately there isn’t one single result, there is only an array of supposed answers to this undying question. CBS president, Howard Stringer is pointing to a different scapegoat for society’s violence. â€Å"I come from a country †¦ that puts a lot of American movies on and has more graphic violence within it’s live drama on the BBC than anywhere else, and there is a lot less violence in the United Kingdom than there is here. There are 200 million guns in America, and that has a lot to do with violence.† He feels it has to do with gun control, which others have suggested. But there are so many violent acts, that one can’t focus on the guns, just like one can’t focus on the media. David Phillips, one of the men we discuss later put it perfectly, â€Å"It’s like watching rain fall on a pond and trying to figure out which drop causes which ripple.†There have been many studies conducted on the effects of violence on children, and on the effects on society as a whole. There has always been an issue of something effecting society, and there will always be a plentitude of scapegoats. What is the actual answer though? No one seems to have it. There is a lot of gray area, but society seems to be making this more of a black and white issue. Will the government ever really take action? Does action need to be taken? Hopefully after reading this, one is more educated on the difficulty in answering these questions.

But the question becomes: am I and my fellow smug-single-hand-clappers missing the point? That, my friend, is a darn good question. The sound of one hand clappingis a koan.
