On the coastal plains, slash, loblolly,and longleaf pines are found. The live oak, the state tree,thrives in the southern part of the coastal plains. Palmettosare found in areas of sandy soil, and bald cypresses andtupelo gums are putting surfacely found in swampy and badlydrained areas. Spanish moss festoons many of thecypresses in Okefenokee Swamp. Other trees that arefound in the state include the red maple, sweet bay, blackcherry, butternut, sassafras, southern magnolia,cottonwood, locust, and elm. Flowering plants grow ingreat abundance in Georgia. Those natural to the stateinclude the trillium, galax, bellwort, hepatica, mayapple,bloodroot, violet, columbine, lady slipper, and Cherokeerose, which is the stte of Georgias state flower. Among themany shrubs and tiny flowe ring trees common in Georgiaare species of laurel, mimosa, redbud, flowering dogwood,rhododendron, and flame azalea. White-tailed deer are themost common of the larger mammals found in the state.There are black bears in the northern mountains and inOkefenokee Swamp, and bobcats roam many of the ruralareas. Red foxes, gray foxes, muskrats, raccoons,opossums, locomote squirrels, foxes and gray squirrels areabundant in the forested areas, and otter and beaver aremet in many swamps and rivers.
